A Day Down South: Your Ultimate Guide to San Clemente
Laguna is a piece of paradise, but it’s always refreshing to get out of town for a bit. Just 20 minutes south, San Clemente’s surf break and Spanish architecture is waiting to be explored. Rugged hiking trails, miles of beaches, and downtown shopping ensure that there’s something fun for everyone.
Here are some of our favorite ways to spend a day down the coast.
San Clemente Beach Trail
There’s something about sunshine and salty air that puts a pep in your step. Take a stroll along San Clemente’s clearly marked beach trail, accessible for most abilities and ages. The coastal trail stretches from North Beach to Calafia, but for easy access start at San Clemente Pier. About a quarter of a mile in, you’ll find T-street beach where you can sit and watch surfers take on summer swells.
Chauplain Bakery
Enjoy a casual brunch downtown at the best bakery on the coast! Family owned and french inspired, you’ll find an array of perfectly flakey buttered croissants and fruit-filled danishes in the pastry case at Chauplain Bakery. Order up a house latte, homemade kefir yogurt, and don’t be shy about getting a box of pastries to go! Located in the heart of downtown, Chauplain is the perfect pit stop before shopping through boutiques that line Avenida Del Mar.

Beach Town Books
Pick up a beach read at Beach Town Books, a charming used bookstore on the outskirts of downtown. Look for gold stars that mark best-sellers as you wander the rustic isles. You’ll find everything from memoirs, to fantasy, adventure, and more! If gently-used isn’t your thing, you can also pick up copies of recently published reads at the front of the shop. Buy three books and get one free, then open to chapter one in their cozy reading nook.

Riviera Beach
Riviera is a blissful beach for lounging the day away. Off the beaten path, Riviera’s wide open space is free from the hustle and bustle of nearby beaches. Trestles or T-street are better for surfing, but Riviera is perfect for setting up an umbrella for a peaceful afternoon or a family beach day. Soak up the sun and play in the waves at this southern San Clemente favorite.
Asada Cantina
A North Laguna classic gets an upscale makeover at Asada Cantina San Clemente. Trade in the laid back atmosphere of Asada Tacos and Beer for a night out at the cantina. A mix of modern and industrial decor creates an effortlessly chic ambience, but for the best table opt for the candle-lit patio. You’ll find your go-to menu selection, but while at the Cantina branch out and try specialties such as their color changing Indigo Blue Tonic and Filet Mignon Tacos with poblano cream.
